Well to start i would high suggest watching this video. Any of these three ways will get you the messy bun look.As for tips, when trying the bun myself I learned a few things.
1- Make sure the bun is high on top of your head.
2- Make sure your hair elastic can stretch
3- The bun will be easier with straight hair then it will with curly hair
4- It might take one then one try to get the bun right, so don’t give up!
